Blocked Account in Germany: Everything You Need to Know About Financing your studies in Germany

What Is a Blocked Account in Germany?

A Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) is a special type of bank account designed for international students, job seekers, and visa applicants. The account is “blocked,” meaning you cannot withdraw the entire amount at once. Instead, the funds are released in monthly installments to cover your living expenses in Germany.

Why Do You Need a Blocked Account?

  • Visa Requirement: The German government requires proof that you can support yourself financially.

  • Covers Living Expenses: Helps you manage monthly expenses while studying in Germany.

  • Ensures Financial Security: The blocked amount guarantees you won’t face financial difficulties during your stay.

Who Needs a Blocked Account?

You need a blocked account if you are applying for:

  • Student Visa: Required for international students who are not receiving full scholarships or financial sponsorship.

  • Job Seeker Visa: Mandatory for professionals seeking jobs in Germany without a prior job offer.

  • Language Course Visa: Needed if you are coming to Germany for a German language course before starting university.

Exception: If you have a scholarship, a sponsor in Germany (via a formal Verpflichtungserklärung or "Declaration of Commitment"), or proof of sufficient funds, you may not need a blocked account.

How Much Money Do You Need in a Blocked Account?

As of  2025, the minimum required balance in a blocked account is €11,904 per year. This means you must deposit at least:

  •  €992 per month (withdrawal limit per month)

  • €11,904 per year (total amount required) â€‹

Is a Blocked Account Necessary?

  • If you plan to study in Germany, a blocked account is one of the easiest and most recognized ways to prove financial stability.

  • It ensures you have enough funds to live in Germany without financial stress.

  • While alternatives exist, a blocked account is often the safest and most straightforward option for securing a visa.
